The Referendum Question

On the face of it this was a very entertaining question, but (without wanting to be a spoilsport) I feel I must point out that there are a number of issues with it.

Firstly, the actual question was "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" and the answers were not "In" and "Out" but "Remain a member of the European Union" and "Leave the European Union" (or, to abbreviate, "Remain" or "Leave").

A more serious issue is the risk that some wag, not knowing the correct answer, would suggest (while the person to whom the question is addressed was thinking about it) "In, Out, or Shake it all about".

This is exactly what happened in our quiz.

What was the question reader supposed to do?

Fortunately, there wasn't much doubt by this stage of the quiz (with 13.5 of the 20 rounds gone) which team was going to win, so the winning team was happy to let the designated contestant give the answer which had just been 'blurted' by his team mate – and collect the points.

If the quiz question had given the correct answers to the referendum question (abbreviated to "Remain" or "Leave"), it's far less likely that the wag would have thought of the joke in time.

Nor, you might say, would the person who was supposed to be answering. But this cannot, IMHO, be described as a problem – there's no rule to say that if you don't know an answer, you must be able to guess it or deduce it.

I recognise that this is a great question for a standard pub quiz, where all teams get the same questions and write down the answers. In a League format, I would suggest that questions with comedy answers should be used with caution – unless we're going to ban anyone other than the designated contestant from speaking.
